Farmers often spray heavy doses of pesticides, use chemical fertilizers and take advantages of other chemicals while growing crops, including corn, wheat, soy, rice, and canola. If the genetic structures of these crops have not been engineered to withstand these chemical substances, they can damage the crops. That’s why farmers use genetically altered seeds. But organic foods are free from these harmful chemicals and pesticides. A major benefit to consumers of organic food is that it is free of contamination with health harming chemicals such as pesticides, fungicides and herbicides.

Organic Farming Builds Healthy Soil. To grow healthy food, you must start with healthy soil. Healthy soil acts much like a sponge and filter, so it helps to clean the water passing through it. Organic matter added to soil improves the soil tilth, or the ability to cultivate and grow. Organic fertilizers improve the condition of the soil, prevent plant disease and increase nutritional content in plants.

Organic farming increases biodiversity at every level of the food chain – all the way from lowly bacteria to mammals. Every link in the organic food supply chain is geared towards maintaining and, wherever possible, increasing the diversity of plants and animals. For decades now, organic farmers have been collecting and preserving seeds – as well as reintroducing rare or unusual varieties of fruits and vegetables. Organic farms use environmentally-generated plant-killing compounds; rotate crops, till, hand weed or mulch to manage weeds. Care and maintenance of soil, and preventive farming methods like crop rotation create fruits and vegetables that contain up to 50% more vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients than intensively farmed foods. That’s why a lot yoga practitioners around the globe prefer organic foods and many yoga retreat centers offer organic foods.

Organic farming methods and practices are also beneficial to wildlife, unlike commercial methods of food production. Organic farming recognizes the direct connection between our health and how the food we eat is produced. Farmers develop fertile soil by rotating crops and using compost, manure and clover. Organic food is safer for the entire planet. The procedures and methods used in organic farming protect the structure and the nutrient content of the soil and preserve its worth over time.
