An Introduction to Laughter Yoga

Laughter triggers healthy physical changes in the body. Humor and laughter strengthen your immune system, boost your energy, diminish pain, and protect you from the damaging effects of stress. Laughter lowers blood pressure. Not only that, it increases vascular blood flow and oxygenation of the blood. Laughter is a workout to the diaphragm and abdominal, respiratory, facial, leg, and back muscles. Stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline can be deduced by laughter. When we use laughter as a Yogic technique, we call it laughter yoga. Laughter Yoga is a revolutionary idea – simple and profound. An exercise routine, it is sweeping the world and is a complete wellbeing workout. The concept of Laughter Yoga is based on the scientific observation that the body cannot differentiate between fake and real laughter, and that both provide the same physiological and psychological benefits.

Laughter Yoga is like an aerobic exercise (cardio workout) which brings more oxygen to the body and brain which makes one feel more healthy and energetic. It relaxes the entire body, relieving it of physical tension for up to nearly an hour after the fact. Laughter Yoga is a single exercise routine which reduces physical, mental and emotional stress simultaneously.

Lloyd (Journal of General Psychology, 1983) showed that laughter is a combination of deep inhalation and full exhalation, inspiring excellent ventilation, wonderful rest and profound release. Increased circulation helps flush the organs of waste products, helping us to operate at peak-performance.

In times of difficulty, it is not easy to remain calm. By imbibing the essence of Laughter Yoga and its characteristics, one can learn to handle any situation effectively without losing one’s composure. Thus you will find it easier to cultivate a consistently positive mental attitude so that you can cope with negative situations and deal with difficult persons in a much healthier and sustainable manner.

For all of the promise of laughter’s health benefits, many not yet scientifically proven, that may be the method’s greatest strength.
